Today is National Bagel Day so it seems like a fine time to touch on one of the humble heroes of the bagel-loving community, the everything bagel. Everything bagels were once strictly a NYC kind of thing but now they’re, well, everywhere.
What is it about the humble mix of poppy and sesame seeds, dried minced garlic and onion and sea salt that has captured the interest of everyone from home chefs to trendy restaurants? For one thing, everything bagel seasoning offers a comforting taste that blends several recognizable tastes without a complicated process of analysis. It’s delicious, it isn’t weird. It makes you think of home, but it doesn’t challenge you to remember which vacation you were on when you tasted this particular taste combo.
You might be familiar with Trader Joe‘s Everything but the bagel seasonings (and this ridiculously easy dip recipe) but Spice Islands recently launched their own Everything Bagel Seasoning, so I took it out for a spin. I haven’t baked with it yet, but I did sprinkle some on what could have been boring cottage cheese and salad.
Up next: Challah with everything bagel seasoning. Because yum.
